TELLURIDE GETS AIRLINE SERVICE AGAIN- JUST IN TIME FOR WINTER 2016-17

It’s been 680 days since a commercial flight touched down at Telluride Regional Airport.  It was September 16, 2014 when a flight came in carrying paying passengers.

Good News, though! The little airline that could- and can- comes back to Telluride’s TEX. On December 17, 2016, a Beechcraft 1900 will again appear out of the skies above the San Juan Mountains and swoop down, and land with a plane load of skiers.

Great Lakes stopped service in 2014 was lost on many people.  It was a change in FAA pilot regulations in 2013 that caused the shortage. The young, brave pilots who flew into Telluride were scooped up by the major airlines in a hiring wave of these more experienced pilots. The pilots who flew into the Telluride Regional Airport were ripe for the picking, because they can really fly. It takes a knowledgeable, valiant pilot to fly to Telluride.  The major airlines’ gain was Telluride’s loss.

Alas, a new crop of young pilots has risen through the ranks, and Great Lakes Airlines is again able to add TEX to its list of destinations. Great Lakes is planning to fly to Telluride at least twice daily during the busy ski season, and when it slows down in the off-season, one time per day.

“Ultimately, we are more than pleased to have our original partner, who knows the airport and the operation, back flying here,” said Matt Skinner in an interview with the Telluride Daily Planet’s July 26, 2016 edition.
